For advanced low-grade lymphoma or high-grade lymphoma, it is usually combined with chemotherapy (called chemo-immunotherapy). Some other topical creams and gels are used for people with skin lymphoma. Although they are not licensed for skin lymphoma in the UK, some of them are available for other skin conditions. Your dermatologist can advise whether they could benefit you.

  • After a few weeks, you might stop the treatment or you might carry on taking a low dose for a longer period of time.
  • The appearance of the dermatitis changed and was more of a hyperaemia.
  • “When I travelled home, my clothes stuck to my skin. I blistered from my calf up to the back of my thigh and I could feel fluid running down my leg.
  • In the early stages, dermatologists are often involved when the skin lymphoma presents with a skin rash, but in the course of treatment you might need to see a haematologist or oncologist.
  • For insect bites and stings, nappy rash or contact dermatitis you’ll probably only need to use a skin cream for up to 1 week.

Wash your hands before and after you’ve applied the medicine, unless you are treating an area on your hands. Unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, follow the directions on the patient information leaflet that comes with the medicine. Corticosteroids should not be confused with anabolic steroids. Hydrocortisone does not make you sleepy, so it’s safe to drive, ride a bike, or use tools and machinery when using this medicine.

Monitor your steroid side-effects

The pharmacist or GP may also ask you questions to find out what triggered your symptoms. To raise awareness of this issue the MHRA has published a Drug Safety Article and prepared a Patient Safety Leaflet for use while patient information leaflets are being updated. The MHRA will continue to monitor reports and provide further updates should they be required. It’s mostly a matter of simply leaving the affected area of skin alone and waiting for it to recover, however long that takes.

During treatment with fluorouracil cream, your skin might initially become red and blotchy before peeling and then healing. Chlormethine is not absorbed through the skin and does not affect your blood counts, so you do not have to have blood test monitoring during treatment. Your medical team should discuss all the options with you before they advise on the treatments they think are best.

How long does it take to get over steroid withdrawal?

However, this specific kind of topical steroid withdrawal reaction could be an extreme form of this reaction. If you’re having success with your topical steroid treatment, you needn’t let this put you off using a topical corticosteroid. When (and if) symptoms occur, know your skin will return to normal, though it may take time. Brentuximab vedotin (Adcetris®) is an antibody that binds to a protein called CD30 on the surface of some lymphoma cells.

PUVA is psoralen plus ultraviolet A (long-wave ultraviolet light) treatment. Psoralen is a medicine that sensitises your skin to ultraviolet light. It is generally only available in larger dermatology centres and you may have to travel further for PUVA treatment than for UVB.

Some people develop facial flushing or skin irritation after drinking alcohol. Not everyone experiences side effects when taking steroids but some people do. In the short-term, the side effects of steroids are usually mild and will go away soon after you finish the treatment course.

Share your experiences and help create change

Some people may have periods of hyper-activity alternating with periods of depression. Some people find it difficult to sleep when they’re taking steroids. “When I travelled home, my clothes stuck to my skin. I blistered from my calf up to the back of my thigh and I could feel fluid running down my leg. “I had a burning rash from my feet all the way over my body. My face was on fire, it was swollen. My eyes were really hard to open, they were swollen. I went off my food, and then I started going into full-blown shakes.

Yellow Card scheme

They are commonly used treatments for many dermatological conditions and are generally considered very safe and effective. If you’ve been using topical corticosteroids for a long time, it’s a good idea to ask your doctor to review your treatment. If you need any medical or dental treatment, show your steroid treatment card to the doctor, dentist or pharmacist so they know that you’re using topical corticosteroids.
